Use of Explosives & Safety
Measures
1.
Local Authorities - The local
Authorities will strictly regulate the use of explosives. They will establish
the terms and guidelines for the handling, storing, and transportation of
explosives.
2.
Ensure that all of the explosives
storage facilities are tidy and dry. Inside the store, the iron should not be
on display. When not in use, it must always be kept securely locked, and a
responsible employee designated by the company management must keep the lock
key.
3.
Any Ignition Source - Explosives
must be kept at least 50 meters away from any source of ignition, including
smoking. Any tools used in the storage of explosive materials must be made of
wood or other non-sparking materials.
4.
Removing explosives from their packaging
- Within the store, explosives may not be taken out of their immediate
packaging or cartridge packaging. Detonators must always be transported and
stored separately from bulk explosives.
5.
Issue of explosives - All
explosives, detonators, and related equipment may only be issued in accordance
with a valid requisition that has been approved by a manager or supervisor
authorized by the company.
6.
Competent Employee - Only a
competent employee may handle or use explosives. He must be duly qualified,
have relevant experience, and be appointed in writing by Management. The
store's explosives may only be removed by the knowledgeable employee. For
handling explosives, the competent employee must be given all necessary
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). He must be appointed in writing by the
company management and sign for the quantity of each item received.
7.
Blasting Work - Before starting
the blasting charges, make sure the immediate area is free of any employees or
visitors who are not involved in the blasting work.
8.
Ensure that the flagmen are
stationed along the edge of the blasting area in conspicuous locations. Before
firing the blasting charge, the competent blasting employee must receive a
signal from the flagman indicating that the area is clear and preventing
employees from entering the blasting area.
